Audrey (Rainey) Smith, 68, of Wheelock, Vt., passed away unexpectedly on June 9, 2017, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
Audrey was born Aug. 21, 1948, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., to Donald A. and Betty (Ruggles) Rainey.
She graduated from Lyndon Institute in June 1966. She married Preston "Jack" Smith on June 18, 1966.
After marrying, they lived in White River Junction before returning to Wheelock where they raised their three daughters.
Audrey held numerous jobs including positions at Lawson Auctions, KREX TV\Radio Station in Grand Junction, Colorado, Laramy Products, R.A. Stahler & Sons, Probate Court and Magic 97.7.
She retired from the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District in August 2013. She also served the community holding various positions including School Board Director, Lister, Justice of the Peace, Wheelock Community Club and Fireman's Auxiliary Member and two terms as Town Clerk and Treasurer.
She spent several years as a Modern Woodmen Teen Club Leader helping to shape the lives of many local teens.
In her free time, Audrey enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, reading, knitting, quilting and genealogy.
Most recently Audrey enjoyed playing computer games and keeping in touch with family and friends through Facebook and email.
She is survived by her husband of almost 51 years, Jack, of Wheelock, Vt.; her three daughters: Tracie Surridge and her husband, Arnold, of West Burke, Vt., Teresa Smith and her wife Penny McGovern, of Mt. Vernon, Maine, and Micki Francombe and her husband Russell, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; her grandson, Thomas Surridge and his partner Laura Cota, of Enfield, N.H.; and her granddaughter, Elisabeth Surridge and her fiancé Kyle Thompson, of Sutton, Vt. She is also survived by her two brothers: Dwight Rainey and his wife Bonny, of Montague, Mich., and Douglas Rainey and his wife Marcia, of Lyndonville, Vt.; and her aunt and uncle Betty and Alden Minot, of Bath, N.H.; as well as her and Jack's large extended families. She was predeceased by her father, Donald Rainey, mother, Betty Barrett, her step-mother, Pauline Rainey, and step-father, Charles Barrett; paternal grandparents, Percy and Ruth (Barnard) Rainey, maternal grandparents Harry and Ila (Easterbrooks) Ruggles, her beloved uncle, Guy Rainey and his wife, Mary, and her loving nephew, Todd Rainey.
Plans for A Celebration of Her Life will be held on Saturday, June 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Wheelock Town Hall.
