Marvel Elizabeth Ash Kittredge died Oct. 28, 2018. She was born Nov. 14, 1929, the second of four children to Clarence Ezra and Emma Etta Ash of Sheffield, Vt. Growing up she enjoyed spending summers relaxing with her aunt Nell in Rutland. She attended Sheffield’s one-room schoolhouse before graduating at the top of her class from Lyndon Institute in 1947. Always expecting to be a career woman, Marvel took every typing or bookkeeping class that she could. After high school she worked in Rutland for two years for Central Vermont Public Service before marrying Merton C. Kittredge on August 14, 1949, and moving to 29 (later 258) Spring St. in St. Johnsbury, where she lived for the rest of her life. Marvel worked in the office of the St. Johnsbury trucking company from 1949-1951 until she left to raise her daughter Rachel, and son Michael. She went back to work at the trucking company again from 1967 to 1993 when the company closed. At one point she worked on some of St. Jay Trucking’s earliest punch-card computers. Marvel was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church and Past Worthy Matron of the Mystic Star Chapter of the Eastern Star. Marvel was devoted to her husband and family. Through their retirement Mert and Marvel spent many happy days with their grandchildren, especially wonderful family trips to Storyland and Clark’s Trading Post. After Merton passed away in 2007, Marvel lost a piece of herself; she was never the same afterwards. Marvel dearly loved cats, and spent her final years caring for her feline companions and regularly donating to SAD SAC and Kingdom Animal Shelter. She is survived by her daughter Rachel M. Kittredge of Barnet, son Michael A. Kittredge of St. Johnsbury, sister Marlene Taylor of St. Johnsbury, three grandchildren: Justin Heywood, Sean Heywood and Carolyn Brennan and their spouses, as well as four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be sent to Kingdom Animal Shelter, 1161 Portland St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. A service will be held in celebration of Marvel’s life at 11:00 am on June 8, 2019 at Third Congregational Church in East St. Johnsbury.
