Eunice K. Craig, 83, of Newport, Vt., died peacefully on Aug. 15, 2012, at the Bel- Aire Center with her family and wonderful caregivers at her side. Eunice was born in Newport on Aug. 28, 1 928, to Vanessa Holton Young and George Reginald Young, the fifth of six children. She grew up in West Burke on the same street as her future husband, Donald Craig. She graduated from Lyndon Institute with the class of 1946. She and Donald were married on Oct. 23, 1 948, and in 1952 they moved to St. Eunice K. Craig Johnsbury to raise their family. Here, they became members of the Universalist Church and continued their involvement with the U.U. for many years. Once her children were older, Eunice returned to school and was proud to receive her Nursing Assistant certification, later working at both the former St. Johnsbury Hospital and Tower Nursing Home. In the early 1970s, Eunice, Don, and their youngest child moved to Newport, and Eunice further pursued her passion for care-giving by volunteering for many years at the Bel-Aire Center. She loved to cook and was always happiest while hosting large gatherings of family and friends. Following Don's retirement, Eunice and he spent many happy summers at their Newark Pond camp, continuing to welcome all. During this time, they also explored the waterways of the Northeast Kingdom in their canoe and enjoyed watching the pond's loon families each year. After nearly 55 years of marriage, Donald died in 2003. Eunice took comfort in the love of friends and family, especially in her close relationships with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, Eunice was predeceased by her step-mother Geneva Young; her siblings: Robert Young, Barbara and her husband, Bernard Blake, Gerald Young, Vanessa Brown and her husband, Lester Piper, Arline Young and her former husband, Joe Riccelli; her nephews: Michael and John Coe; and her granddaughters, Jillian and Miranda Greenwood. Eunice is survived by her daughter Cynthia Greenwood and her husband, Paul, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; her son Reginald Craig and his partner, Karen Frank, of St. Petersberg, Fla.; her son Charles Craig and his wife, Margo Trotier, of Burlington, Vt.; her three grandchildren: Tammy Greenwood-Stewart and her husband, Patrick, of San Diego, Calif., Ceilidh Greenwood of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michael Appleby of Maine; her great- grandchildren: Mikaela and Esmee Stewart of San Diego, Calif.; her step-siblings: Charlene Rogers and Avery Hooper; her sister-in-law, Beverly Young; and her former brother-in-law, Walter Coe. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews and shared a particularly special relationship with her niece Carlene Riccelli and nephew Anthony Hill. A special thank you to Dr. Peter Harris and the staff of the Bel- Aire Center for their kind and compassionate care. A celebration of Eunice's life will take place at a later date.
