Franz Austin Smith, formerly of Newport, died at home February 10, in
Lyndonville, after battling cancer. Son of Raymond and Anna (Franz)
Smith, he was born on August 21, 1927. He served his country in the
United States Navy from 1945-1946 and again from 1950-1953. Franz
worked as a tradesman while attending college. He graduated from Lyndon
State College in 1959.
Following college he worked as a schoolteacher from 1959 until his retirement in 1988. Franz
taught his students as he lived his life - methodical, caring and with humor.
Among his accomplishments: he was a lifelong member of the
American Legion; he owned a garage and service station in
Lyndonville; he obtained a license in real estate; he was a
lifetime membership of the Vermont Vocational Teacher
Association; and he was an Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks. He was also an active member of the
Football Association, the Lions Club, and the NRA.
His pastimes included hunting, fishing, and boating. Franz
enjoyed his time as a ski instructor, Vermont State Police
Auxiliary Trooper, Orleans County Deputy Sheriff and as a
member of the Newport Police Department.
He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Jetta (Ramsey)
Smith; daughter Toni Smith; and two sisters, Vivian Monahan and Delores Towle.
Franz was an accomplished entrepreneur and a beloved family
man. He is survived by his loving companion of 22 years,
Beverly Tripp and family; son William Smith; daughter Jetta
(Smith) Grant; 5 granddaughters and 9 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held in the spring with notification
and time to follow at a later date.
