Ethel Blanche Bishop Vollmer, 79, of Westfield Avenue, Bridgeport, Conn., died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, in St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport. She was born Jan. 14, 1926, in East Burke, Vt., the daughter of Blanche Gray Bishop and Earl G. Bishop Sr. Ethel attended schools in Sutton and Lyndon, Vt., graduating from Lyndon Institute in 1944. She studied law in Boston, Mass. Ethel was employed for the law firm of Hale and Dorr in Boston for many years. Later, sickness in the family brought her back to Vermont where she worked for Caledonia County Prosecutor Clifton L. Drew, Central Vermont Public Service and Chittenden County Superior Court. While in Burlington, Vt., she met reporter, journalist and photographer Craig Custer Vollmer and they married on Aug. 22, 1959, in Woodsville, N.H. They moved to Michigan where their son Kenneth Craig Vollmer was born. As Mr. Vollmer's work took them around the country, Ethel followed and worked for a number of attorneys in St. Joseph, Mich.; Framingham, Mass.; and Lincoln, R.I. Later, her husband's position with The Bridgeport Post brought them to Fairfield County, where she worked for a number of attorneys. She and her husband ran Vollmer Photography and most recently had her own business, Vollmer Paralegal Services. Ethel was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fairfield, where she worked for three years with the staff producing the Epistle, the parish newsletter. She also served as office secretary for a time at Christ's Church in Easton, Conn. Ethel always enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, writing, painting, singing, and playing piano and guitar. Some of her favorite events were art shows, concerts and harness races. She was a member of the National Association of Legal Secretaries, a charter member of the Photographic Historical Society of New England and a life member of the Lyndon Institute Alumni Association. Ethel was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Craig; as well as her brother, Earl G. Bishop Jr. of Lyndonville, Vt. She is survived by her son, Kenneth; her sisters, Etta M. Bishop of Mansfield, Conn., and Earlene Young and her husband Edward of Woodsville, N.H.; her sister-in-law, Alice Bishop of Lyndonville; her nieces, Jan Rossier of Lyndonville, Lynn Rhoads and her husband Ted of Woodsville, and Korie Bishop of Stafford Springs, Conn.; her nephews, Brian Bishop and his wife Lara of Lyndonville, and Craig Behne of Houston, Texas; several grandnieces and - nephews; and one great-grandniece. A memorial service will be held Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Fairfield, with the Rev. Bennett A. Brockman officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ethel's memory to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Capital Campaign Fund, 661 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
