Mrs. Bertha Smith of Sunset Drive in St. Johnsbury passed
away unexpectedly early Monday morning, Jan. 9, 2012. She
was 84. She was born in Wheelock on Dec. 6, 1927, as Bertha Park. She
was raised in Lyndonville by Gordon and Lillian Smith and
graduated from Lyndon Institute.
Bertha was a library assistant at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum
for many years. She volunteered at the St. Johnsbury
Corrections Department doing needed errands for the inmates.
Years ago she was a Cub Scout den mother.
She is survived by Omlah, her husband of 64 years; two sons:
Dennis Smith and wife Deborah of St. Johnsbury, Gary Smith
and wife Ann of North Concord; nine grandchildren and 1 great-
grandson: Dennis and Deborah's two daughters Rebecca
McGregor, husband Andrew and their son Callum of St.
Johnsbury; Jordan Smith and her fiancé Drew Cota of
Sheldon; Gary and Anne's eight children Halaina, John, Shane,
Robby, Mollie, Troy, Jasmine, and Corey; step-sisters Beverly
and Priscilla and their families; Omlah's brother Edward Smith
and his family. She is also survived by her caregivers Laura, Michelle, Tammy,
and Cecile. The family will observe their services privately. She will be
buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the spring.
Bertha derived great satisfaction by being a Hospice volunteer.
It would be fitting, for anyone wishing to honor Bertha's
memory, to consider sending a contribution to Caledonia Home
Health (mark check for 'Hospice'), 161 Sherman Dr., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
