Donald A. Rainey, 80, of Airport Road in Lyndonville, passed
away at home surrounded by his family Thursday morning,
June 1, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was
born in Lyndon on Nov. 25, 1925, the son of Percy and Ruth
(Barnard) Rainey. After graduating from Lyndon Institute in
1
943, he worked for the Town of Lyndon on the road
department. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served in the
European Theatre, seeing action at the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war he worked at the old Bailey's Grain Store in
Lyndonville. He married Pauline Deyette Newland July 13, 1957.
Donald and Pauline moved back to Lyndon in 1984. The Raineys
had lived on Chestnut Street in Manchester, N.H., where he
worked for Silver Bros./Cott Distributing for over 30 years. His
family will never forget the care he gave Pauline; she passed
away Jan. 30, 2002. Furthermore they will always remember
his generosity and thoughtfulness; he was always remembering
family birthdays. He is survived by five children: Audrey Smith
and her husband Jack of Wheelock (P.O. Box 1304, Lyndonville,
VT 05851), Dwight Rainey and his wife Bonny of Muskegon,
Mich., Douglas Rainey and his wife Marcia of Lyndonville,
Marshall Newland Jr. of Concord, N.H., and Daniel Newland and
his wife Judy of East Burke; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister,
Betty Minot and her husband Alden of Bath, N.H.; a sister-in-law,
Mary Rainey of Lyndonville; several nieces, nephews,
cousins, and Pauline's extended family. He was predeceased
tragically by a grandson, Todd Rainey, and by his brother, Guy
Rainey. Graveside services will be held at the Lyndon Center
Cemetery Monday, June 5 at 1 p.m. Pastor Tim Pittman will
officiate the service. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome.
Donald requested there be no visiting hours. Memorial
