Mrs. Winnifred R. (Woodward) Cass of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died
Friday, July 6, 2007, at the St. Johnsbury Health and
Rehabilitation Center at the age of 82. She was born Nov. 23, 1924,
in Cabot, Vt., the last surviving child of the late Raymond
and Evelyn (Daigneault) Woodward. She was a graduate of
Lyndon Institute's Class of 1942. On Dec. 19, 1942 Winnie
married Dale Cass. They lived near Willoughby Lake and were
caretakers of the properties owned by the Dr. Harter family for
25 years. Later, they moved to East Haven. Winnie worked at
Vermont Tap & Die Company in Lyndonville, Vt., for several
years and then Northeast Tool Company in Lyndon for several
more years as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1986. She also was a
bookkeeper for the Tap & Die Credit Union, now known as
North Country Federal Credit Union in Lyndonville for nearly 30
years. Winnie was an active member of Eastern Star chapter 28
of West Burke and Lyndon since 1964. She held several
positions there, including Ruth, district director, and was worthy
matron several times throughout the years. In 2005, she was
commissioned grand representative to Nova Scotia and the
Prince Edwards Islands, which she enjoyed visiting. Reading,
ceramics, knitting, crocheting, and puzzles brought her much
enjoyment. But her greatest enjoyment was spending time with
her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Survivors
include four children, Louise Wells and husband Raymond of St.
Johnsbury, Edward Cass and wife Gloria of Hartland, Vt.,
Priscilla Rossier and husband Anthony of St. Albans, Vt., and
Thomas Cass of New York; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-
grandchildren; her sister in-law, Barbara Woodward of West
Burke, Vt.; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by
her husband, Dale Cass in 1982; her son, Stanley Cass in the
early 1970s; her brother, Ralph Woodward; and her sister and
brother in-law, Marie and George Hill Graveside services will be
held Friday July 20, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Woodmont Cemetery
in East Burke. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial
