Russell A Lynaugh, 93, of St. Johnsbury, passed away on June 1, 2016 at the
St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Russell was born in Lyndon, Vermont, on May 25, 1923, to Allen Lynaugh
and Flossie (Gilbert) Lynaugh. At the age of three, his mother died and
Russell and his three sisters were raised by his Aunt Bertha Gilbert and
Uncle Morris Gilbert.
His high school days at Lyndon Institute were cut short when World War II
broke out. He decided to leave school half way through his senior year and
enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He saw action in New Guinea, Bismarck
Archipelago, and Southern Philippines. After receiving an honorable
discharge in 1946 from the Army Air Corp, Russell worked at VT Tap & Die
and Ralston Purina, as well as painting houses.
On Columbus Day, 2008, Lyndon Institute surprised Russell by presenting
him with his high school diploma in front of students, staff, faculty, and his
five sons.
Russell is survived by four sons; Donald Lynaugh of Williston, Dale Lynaugh
and wife Elaine of Peacham, Dwayne Lynaugh and wife Susan of North
Danville, and Danny Lynaugh and wife Judy of Dahlonega, Georgia.
Russell was predeceased by his parent, Allen and Flossie Lynaugh, his son
Dennis Lynaugh, and his three sisters; Barbara Truex of Binghamton, N.Y.,
Glenn Lynaugh of Falls Church, Va., and Marion Root of St. Johnsbury, Vt.
At Russell's request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral. The family
will observe services privately at a later date.
