Hildegarde Lorraine Brown, age 92, of Gilson Lane, East Burke, Vermont, peacefully died on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017. Hildegarde was born October 3, 1924, in Orford, N.H., the daughter of Wilman and Sylvia (Murray) Amadon. Hildegarde graduated from Lyndon Institute and soon after joined other young women from the area to help her country during World War II building airplanes in a factory in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She enjoyed telling stories of the time she spent working hard, living in small hostels, visiting cousins who returned injured from the war and visiting New York City. Upon returning to the area she married Harold Hutchinson Brown and joined him on his farm on Mt. Hunger Road where she farmed alongside him until his death in 1990. Her hobbies included gardening, braiding rugs, solving crossword puzzles and beating her family members in Scrabble. Hildegarde will be remembered as an integral part of the East Burke Church Community where she served as President of the United Workers, director of the East Burke Sunday School for many years and a member of the East Burke Church Quilt Group. Many community members own her handmade quilts or potholders and have enjoyed her jellies and jams. Babies have been swaddled in quilts she donated to the hospitals. She was known for her award-winning quilts at the Caledonia County Fair. Hildegarde is survived by four daughters: Lorraine (James) Impey of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Ellen Wilder of East Haven, Vt., Heidi Brown of Rutland, Vt., and Celia Ewing of East Burke, Vt.; two sons: Clinton Brown (Diane Porell) of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Steven Brown (Leslie Miller) of East Burke, Vt.; a sister: Wilma (Carl) Zettlemoyer of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren: Michelle Impey, Alison Impey (Michael Harbut), Charlene Impey (Mike VanHandel), Jeffrey Impey, Noelle Meyer, Andrew Miller-Brown (Angela), William Miller-Brown, Jason Chamberlain (Shannon), and Jody Chamberlain (Marianne); four great-grandchildren: Katja Meyer, Josiah Chamberlain, Arthur Miller-Brown and Caleb VanHandel. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Hutchinson Brown, a daughter, Eloise Dombroski and a daughter, Linda (Evangeline) Brown. Memorial Services will take place in the spring and will be announced later. Donations can be made to the East Burke Church in memory of Hildegarde Brown.
