Arthur J. "Mickey" McCann Jr., 87, of Lyndonville, died peacefully Monday morning at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, Vt. following a brief illness. He was born in Lyndonville on Sept. 10, 1924 the son of Arthur J. and Clara (Tower) McCann Sr. Mickey was a graduate of Lyndon Institute's class of 1942 where he played football and was captain of the track team where he was undefeated in the high and low hurdles for the season and became the Vermont State Champion his senior year. Mickey then entered the US Army Air Force in 1943, serving his country during WWII with the 348th Bomb Squad and the 99th Bomb Group in Italy and France. In 1951 he received a bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Vermont. On July 9, 1955 he married Beverly Daniell of Brattleboro. They lived in St. Johnsbury and St. Johnsbury Center while Mickey worked at Nate's Clothing store and later for the Ralston Purina Co. in St. Johnsbury in the business office for 15 years. He then moved his family to Montpelier where he worked for the Vermont Dept. of Education as the chief of statistics and information until 1979. He then worked as the business manager for the Barre City School District retiring in 1989. He had also served on three school boards. Mickey loved his church, his family, and his friends. He was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lyndonville, St. John's in St. Johnsbury and St. Augustine's in Montpelier. He enjoyed the love of his family, sports, camping at his lakeside Northeast Kingdom Camp, politics, and attending the Lyndon Area Senior Meal Site, and his beloved Boston Red Sox. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Beverly McCann; two grandchildren, Tyler W. Pryce and Elizabeth A. Pearson; and a sister in-law, Carolyn Daniell. Survivors include five children, Casey McCann and wife Christine of Lafayette, Calif., Kellie Pearson of Santa Barbara, Calif., Darcie McCann and husband Douglas Steward II of Lyndon, Jamie Pryce and husband William of Montpelier, and Demsey McCann and wife Corrie of East Barre; 10 grandchildren, Nicole, Daniell Shae, Lyndsay, Kara, Kate, Kieran, Haley, Zoe, AJ and Jacob; a sister, Ruth Nurenberg and husband Sidney of Lyndonville; his in-laws, Clarence "Dan" Daniell of Brattleboro, Marvourine Filgate of Brattleboro and Bettejane Barnes and husband Marshall of Lyndon; several nieces and nephews, including Gary and Mark Nurenberg, who were like sons to Mickey; and many close friends, including Edifice and Bonifice Bonhomme of Quebec. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Lyndonville on Friday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Patrick Forman celebrant. Friends may meet with the family Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home.
