HAMEL: Arline E., formerly of Barton, died Wednesday morning,
Oct. 6, 2004, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center
in St. Johnsbury, at the age of 86. She was born June 16, 1918,
in Burke, Vt., daughter of the late Roy A. and Elizabeth M.
(Hoffman) Smith. A graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of
1936, Mrs. Hamel later graduated from Lyndon State College,
Class of 1980. On June 13, 1939, she married Cyril J. Hamel.
She worked at Lyndon State College as the manager of the
book store there for 14 years. Mrs. Hamel was active in the
Barton United Church Women's Group and the Barton Library
Club. She enjoyed decorating sweatshirts for craft fairs,
"Designed by A. Hamel." Survivors include her daughter, Lucille
H. Gillette of Mesa, Ariz.; two grandsons, Milton E., and Michael
J. Gillette of Apache Jct., Ariz.; her sister, Eleanor Chase and
her husband Robert of Littleton, N.H.; her sister-in-law,
Gertrude Smith of Scranton, Pa.; and nieces, nephews and
cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Cyril Hamel, on
Sept. 7, 2001; and her brother, Irving Smith. Services will be
private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of
flowers, donations made in her memory may be directed to the
Barton Library, Glover Street, Barton, VT 05822.
