ORANGE - Bernard V. Benoit Sr., 71, of Route 110, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.Born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on July 13, 1942, he was the son of the late Leonel and Germaine (Ladry) Benoit. He was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. After his schooling he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.When he returned to Vermont he was employed in construction work.On Sept. 4, 1965, he married Claire O'Connor in Waterbury, Conn. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Vermont where they made their home and raised their four children. He will be sadly missed by his K-9 companion, Lizzy. Survivors include his wife of 48 years of marriage, Claire Benoit, of Orange, and their four children: Bernard Benoit Jr. and his wife, Darci, of Swanton, Vt.; Edward Benoit and his wife, Nancy, of Barre, Vt.; Lisa Woodworth and her husband, Donald, of Orange, Vt.; and Leonel Benoit, of Williamstown, Vt.; as well as nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Leo Paul Benoit, of Panama City, Fla., Richard Benoit, of Lyndonville, Vt., and Victor Benoit, of Danville, Vt.; two sisters, Marie Laprade, of Barre, and Suzanne Bartlett, of Sheffield, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Maurice Benoit.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at 1 p.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre. Family and friends may call at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. Extra parking is available in St. Monica's parking lot. Burial will follow the Mass at Brookhaven Cemetery in Orange, Vt.In lieuof flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Project Independence, 81 N.
