Dr. Robert E. Butler, Educator, husband of Doris (Douglas)
Butler of Windsor, passed away on Friday, (May 25, 2001) in a
Windsor Nursing Facility. Born on April 13, 1922, in West
Hartford, he was the son of Grace and Ernest Butler of
Wethersfield. Bob received his BA and MA from Wesleyan
University and his PhD from Rutgers University. He taught
English at UConn and Douglass College for Women in New
Brunswick, NJ, and served as Head of the English Department
at the Choate School in Wallingford, and the headmaster of the
Tilton School, Tilton, NH. He was the Vice-President of
Development at Gettysburg College and retired as the Asst.
Headmaster from the Gunnery School in Washington. Bob was
thrilled each summer during his retirement years to return to
Meredith, NH to avidly pursue pars on the golf course, and to
catch fish on Lake Waukewan. Besides his wife Doris of 56
years, he leaves a loving family, two sons and their wives,
Doug Butler and Hollis Seamon of Albany, NY and Don and Jane
Butler of Easton; three grandchildren, Michelle, Katherine and
Gordon; his brother and wife, Alden and Joan Butler; several
nieces and nephews; and friend, Marilyn Sandidge and her
family of Westfield. A memorial service will be held on
Wednesday, May 30, 11 a.m., at the First Church, 115 Palisado
Ave., Windsor. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Suffield, at
the convenience of his family. His family will receive friends on
Tuesday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor.
