Alden W. "Al" Eaton, 81, of Kirby, died peacefully Monday morning Oct. 7, 2013 at The Pines
Rehabilitation and Health Ctr. in Lyndon with his loving family by his side.
He was born July 19, 1932 in Worcester, Mass. the son of Spencer and Eleanor (Way) Eaton.
He graduated from Keene, N.H. High School in 1951. Later, he graduated from the University
of New Hampshire with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. AL served his country in the
US Navy during the Korean War. In 1959 he married Terry Montgomery.
In 1959 - 1960 he worked at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Mr. Eaton then taught
high school in Billings, Mont. for two years and at Lancaster and White Mountain Regional
High School in New Hampshire for six years. In 1969 he began a 25-year career with St. Johnsbury
Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vt. where he was a dedicated biology and chemistry teacher and coach,
retiring in 1994. While at ST. J. A., Mr. Eaton coached the Cross Country Track Team and the
Ski Team. He was a long distance runner himself and enjoyed running the back roads of the
Northeast Kingdom. An active member of his Kirby community, Al served the town in different
positions including lister and justice of the peace. He could be found helping his friends and
neighbors sugaring, haying or working and cleaning up his own woods. He enjoyed watching
wildlife and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife Terry of Kirby;
their three children, Norma Shepherd and husband LeRoy of Brooklyn, N.Y., William Eaton
and wife Paula of Essex Jct. and David Eaton of Burlington; five grandchildren, Chrissie,
Tyler, Kiersten, Ryan and Lauren; his sister in-law, Diane Eaton of Clinton Corners, N.Y.;
and three nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, John Eaton and an infant son,
John Jeffrey Eaton. Friends may gather at the Eaton home in Kirby this Saturday Oct. 12 from
2-4 p.m. Donations made in his memory may be directed to CALEX Ambulance Service, P. O. Box 570,
St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. Guibord Funeral Home of Lyndonville is assisting the family with arrangements.
