John McCormick Nesbitt of Stow and Sargentville, Maine, passed away April 28, 2020, at his parents' home in Stow. He was 32.
Born May 15, 1987 in Bangor, Maine, John grew up in Surry and Sargentville, Maine. Diagnosed with Type I diabetes at a young age he faced the challenges that come with such a condition bravely and did not let it define the boundaries of his life.
John touched the lives of countless people and he tried to be a friend to everyone he met. His creative spirit was gentle and he was always empathetic to those who were struggling. He was fond of travel and appreciated good food and was an avid sports fan. From the opening day of each SEC football season until the very last game, his Georgia flag was flying on the porch.
The outdoors was where John flourished; many a winter afternoon would find him and his brother with others skating at the Salt Pond. He was a committed and enthusiastic hockey player from the age of three. He cheered on the Maine Black Bears and was thrilled to be part of the Fryeburg Academy team that won the 2004 Maine State Hockey Championship.
Working on his tractor, hiking, skiing (pleased of breaking a first run trail from the top of Sugarloaf on an early New Years Day), sailing and taking the Whaler for a cruise on Eggemoggin Reach were Johns passions and where he was unbound.
His gift of love brought immeasurable joy to his family and their heartbreak is unfathomable.
John is survived by his parents Jane and Sam Nesbitt; his brother Ethan Nesbitt of Portland, Maine; his special friend Danielle Carr of Bristol, N.H., who shared untold love and happiness with John; his grandmother Dorothy Minott and uncle Robert Minott of Ellsworth, Maine; his aunt Susan Minott of Newburyport, Mass.; his aunt Sandra Williams of Crozet, Va.; his uncle Guntis Stefenhagen of Osprey, Fla.; his cousins, Jenny M. Tooter of Old Greenwich, Conn.; Laura M. Quigley of Revere, Mass.; Andrew Nesbitt and Graham Nesbitt of Charlottesville, Va.; David Stefenhagen of Sarasota, Fla.; John Stefenhagen of Berkeley, Calif.; and Sarah Stefenhagen of Philadelphia, Pa.
John was predeceased by an infant sister, Grace Ruth Nesbitt.
Memorial services will be held at a date to be announced. Friends wishing to remember John may make donations in his memory to the Miranda Leavitt Diabetes Care Fund, Memorial Hospital, 3073 White Mountain Highway, North Conway, NH 03860.
Arrangements are under the care of Wood Funeral Home at 9 Warren St. in Fryeburg, Maine.
"Now faith, hope and love abide these three, and the greatest of these is love."
