Craig Alan Maynard died on Sept. 19, 2010, in Portland, Ore., at the
age of 51 years. He was born in St. Johnsbury on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, 1958,
the youngest son of Frederick and Betty Maynard, exactly
two months after they moved to Green Street, still the family
residence. (He always claimed that the whole world celebrated his
birthday.) Craig was an accomplished artist and enjoyed acting, first
at St. Johnsbury Academy where, among other roles, he was the lead
in O. Henry's "The Cop and the Anthem," which made state finals. He
also acted in community theater in Portland. He attended college in
Eugene, Ore., and Dover, N.J. He was a passionate swimmer from an
early age and rarely passed a river or pond in which he didn't take a
dip. He was an avid hiker and loved exploring through the woods. He
was most environment-conscious, always riding his bicycle whenever
possible. He was very vocal about his beliefs in that area. Craig is
survived by his mother, Betty Lou Petty Maynard; siblings Stephen
and wife Priscilla, Sandra, Cheryl and husband Tony Mountain,
Charles, Stuart and wife Laurie, Christopher and wife Christine, and
Sarah; nephews and nieces Jason, James, Susannah, Paul, Heather,
Jennifer and Delvin; special cousins Douglas and Kandy Petty, Jeffrey
and Gloria Petty Aldrich, Barry Rock, Paul Petty, Pamela Petty and
husband Jim Rust; four aunts, Freda Maynard Leonard, Isabel
Maynard Montgomery, Theresa Maynard Remick and Virginia
Maynard Decelle and husband Paul; and many other cousins and
grandnephews and nieces, who always enjoyed his wit, humor and
eternal youth. He was predeceased by his father last year.
