Maureen "Casey" Cassidy of St. Johnsbury passed away at home Jan. 4, 2010, at the age of 62. She was born in St. Johnsbury on March 6, 1947, one of four children born to Raymond and Lila (Sherburne) Cassidy. Maureen graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1966 and was previously married to Leonard Marcotte. Casey was a longtime school bus driver for the St. Johnsbury School district. She was last employed at Burke Mountain and also cleaned houses. She was elected second constable for the town of St. Johnsbury, 1979 to 1999, and was the town's dog officer from 1987 to 1999. She planted the beautiful, beautiful gardens for Bag Balm in Lyndonville and herself had some outstanding flowers gardens. Casey was able to travel extensively, enjoyed reading, and loved animals of all kinds. But what was central to Casey was that she was not afraid to tell you exactly what she thought and said it the way it was. Her family writes she was a very special person who would do anything for you. She will be greatly missed. She was predeceased by her father, Raymond G. Cassidy, on Oct. 2, 1977; her mother Lila Sherburne Cassidy on Nov. 11, 1987; a sister, Maj. Virginia Walsh on Jan. 31, 1970; and several aunts and uncles. She is survived by two brothers, Raymond S. Cassidy and wife Mary (Hagan) Cassidy of Hinesburg, and Martin H. Cassidy and wife Claudette (Paquin) Cassidy of Lyndonville; nephew Timothy Cassidy and wife Toni of Jericho; a niece Kathleen Cassidy of St. Albans. A celebration of her life will be observed in St. Johnsbury this Sunday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at North Congregational Church, 1325 Main St. across from the Fairbanks Museum. The Rev. William Cotte will officiate. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial contributions could be directed to SAD-SAC, care of The Caledonian-Record, P.O. Box 8, St. Johnsbury VT 05819.
