West Barnet, VT - James Hartley Choate, 66, died Thursday,
December 31, 2015, at the St. Johnsbury Health &
Rehabilitation Center after living heroically with brain cancer.
He was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, April 7, 1949, a son of
Charles A. and Mary Jane (Hartley) Choate, Sr. James was
raised on the family farm in West Barnet and graduated from
St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1967. He continued his
education at Syracuse University and graduated in the Class of
1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History and was
commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force
through the ROTC program. Serving his country was important
to James and he later acted as the commanding officer at the
Army National Guard center in Lyndonville, VT. He also served
in the Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Major.
James was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Barnet at
West Barnet. Active in community service, he served on the
Barnet School Board and Barnet Town Budget Committee, and
was a lifelong donor to the American Red Cross. He was an
avid history buff and enjoyed visiting museums and historical sites.
James is survived by his wife Linda A. (Hale) Choate, of West
Barnet, to whom he was married on September 4, 1992; two
children, Kelly Donaghy and companion Kenneth Thissell of St.
Johnsbury, and Jeremy Noyes and wife Betsy of Essex Junction,
VT; eight grandchildren, Andereck, Haley, Riley, Dakota,
Madison, Devon, Lucy, and Alice; three great grandchildren,
Alexander, London, and Lacey; a brother, Charles A. Choate,
Jr., of Underhill, VT; two nephews, Matthew Choate and
Alexander Choate and wife Marisa and daughters Kara and Alicia.
James was predeceased by his parents, Charles on Feb. 16, 1992 and Mary Jane on November 12, 2001;
and a brother, Jonathan A. Choate on December 26, 2008.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service celebrating James's life is being planned for
a later date. Burial will be in the West Barnet Cemetery in the spring.
