Gabriel "Gib" Joseph Handy , of St. Johnsbury, died Monday, Feb. 27,
2006, in Burlington, Vt., at Fletcher Allen Health Care at the age of 63.
He was born in St. Johnsbury on Oct. 12, 1942, the son of Richard
and Mary B. Handy. Gib spent his life working for St. Johnsbury. As a
dispatcher for the Vermont State Police for nearly 30 years, he was
able to blend in a high civic commitment. From 1973-1984, he served
on the Town Planning Commission. In 1984, he started a 20-year
commitment to the St. Johnsbury Board of Selectmen where he spent
many years as chairman. Additionally, he was a strong member of the
Jay Cees, the Industrial Park Board, St. Johnsbury Development Fund,
the Jay-Lyn Revolving Loan Fund and the St. Johnsbury Elks. He was
a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. In 2003, the St.
Johnsbury Town Report was dedicated to Gib where it noted, "Gib
Handy's honesty, great sense of humor, integrity and in-depth
knowledge of St. Johnsbury has made him an exceptional community
representative. Gib Handy made a difference in St. Johnsbury. The
positive impacts of Gib's many years of dedicated community service
will be appreciated by the people of St. Johnsbury for generations to
come." Survivors include three sisters, Annie M. and her husband
Gene Boivin of Morrisville, Marion T. Handy and Isabel Rae Handy,
both of St. Johnsbury; a nephew, James R. Boivin of Johnson; a niece,
Sharon Moran of Morrisville; and several aunts, uncles, cousins,
great-nephews and -nieces, and many friends. A funeral Mass will be
celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church Friday, March 3, 2006, at
11 a.m., with Fr. Patrick Forman. Spring burial will be at Mt. Calvary
Cemetery. Friends are invited to meet the family at Sayles Funeral
Home Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be
