Dennis Blackwell Reed, 64, of Augusta, Maine, formerly of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at the Alfond Center For Wellness in Augusta. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on April 22, 1949, the son of Dr. Howard B. Reed and Elizabeth (Mount) Reed. Dennis spent his childhood years in St. Johnsbury, where he was educated in St. Johnsbury schools, graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1967. On Sept. 6, 1969, Dennis married Ann Cheney in Newport, N.H., and shortly after, in 1971, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Vermont. To those who knew Dennis, he was very determined and an incredibly hard worker his entire life. He was employed with St. Johnsbury Trucking for nearly 24 years, right up until they closed for business, where he worked his way up the ranks to Vice President. Shortly thereafter, Dennis and his wife, Ann, moved to Augusta when he began employment with MESCA. He remained there for nearly 20 years, working his way up to Vice President again, until his untimely passing. When he wasn't hard at work, Dennis served as Assistant Scout Master when his son, Scott, was a child. He also enjoyed reading and traveling with his wife, Ann. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Dennis will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him. Dennis is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann Reed, of Augusta; his son, Scott Reed and his wife, Lori Law-Reed, and their children, Jackson and Alexander, all of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Howard B. Reed Jr. of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and two sisters, Judith Martel of Addison, Vt., and Barbara Robarts of Lancaster, N.H. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home in Newport, N.H. The family will be available for guests from 1-2 p.m. prior to services. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery depending upon weather.
