Daniel Frederick "Dan" Mahoney, 76, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2018, from esophageal cancer at home in Sacramento, California, with his wife Roz by his side.
Dan was born in Montclair, New Jersey, to John Ludlow Mahoney and Mary Rogers Mahoney on September 16, 1942. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, attended Duke University, and graduated with a degree in Business and Economics from Nasson College, in Springvale, Maine. While there he played varsity soccer, served as Student Association Vice President, was awarded the Annual Outstanding Senior Cup for scholarship and leadership and was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. After serving in the United States Navy, Dan worked for Honeywell in the Boston area. He married Roz in 1968 and was selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1970 for his Community Leadership. He worked for Fairbanks Weighing Systems for twenty five years in Vermont, Texas, and California, as well as Carlson Scales and Custom Development Company in California.
As a devoted father, he was active in the Carmichael, California community, serving as a scout leader, soccer coach, a swim and tennis board member and a tireless fundraiser. He pursued a life long interest in transportation and trains and belonged to the 26th Street Model Railroad Club and the Sacramento Modular Railroad Club as well as several regional and national railroad associations. He and Roz enjoyed traveling the world, often by train, as they visited railroad museums and attended many rail fairs and conventions.
Dan is preceded in death by his mother and father, John and Mary Mahoney and his brother, John Timothy Mahoney. Dan is survived by his wife of fifty years, Rosalie Daubenspeck Mahoney; sons, John Nathaniel (Nate) Mahoney of San Francisco, California and Daniel Joshua (Josh) Mahoney of Tahoe City, California; sister Ellen Simmonds (Tom) of Falmouth, Maine; sister-in-law Carol Mahoney of Jacksonville, Florida; brother-in-law Warren Daubenspeck (Cindy) of Gainesville, Georgia; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Dan's life will be led by Reverend Dr. Roger Jones at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento 2425 Sierra Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95825 on Nov. 3, 2018 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the above Unitarian Universalist Society or to The St. Johnsbury History and Heritage Center, 421 Summer St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
