Carol York Wheelock, 68, of Gilman, passed away from a massive stroke Friday,
Sept. 19, 2014, at DHMC in Lebanon, N.H.
Born in Portland, Maine, on Nov. 2, 1945, she grew up on South Main Street in
St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Norman Jr. and Margaret (Dunn) York. She
graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1963 and later from Andover College
with a degree in data processing.
Over the years Carol proofread at The Steinhour Press, worked at the Gilman
Headstart Program, operated Carousel Day Care Center in Lancaster, and
retired from Gilman Lunenburg School District as a para-educator. She was a 20
year Hospice volunteer with Caledonia Home Health. Recently she volunteered
at her daughter Missy's daycare, Best Friends Family Daycare, in Thornton,
N.H., where she was called "Grammy Carol." She just loved kids.
She is survived by her husband Ed Wheelock of Gilman; two daughters: Michele
'Shelly' Rivers of Thornton, N.H., Melissa "Missy" Rivers and husband Wayne
Hewes also of Thornton, N.H.; three step-children: Tina Fenoff of Bethlehem,
N.H., Karen Wheelock of Plymouth, N.H., and Tammy Kantarowski of
Marshfield, Mass.; three brothers: Norman 'Buzz' York III and wife Ruth of
Lyndonville, Anthony 'Tony' York and wife Pam of Gilman, William 'Bill' York of
Manchester, N.H.; sister Patti York and Annette Skelton of Hawthorne, N.J.; nieces and nephews.
She adored her 12 grandchildren: Heather and Michael, Adrienne and Jillian,
Gabriel; Christopher, Tara, Jessica, Daniel, and Gibson; Brooke and Parker;
three great-grandchildren: Jacob, Mackennah, and Aubrey.
In 1971 she was predeceased by her son Michael David Rivers at the age of 5.
His special needs formulated the reason for Carol's chosen profession.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased in 2011 by her grandson
Benjamin Dodge and recently by a granddaughter Ava.
Visiting hours will be held in St. Johnsbury this Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 5-8 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held in St. Johnsbury this Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 2
p.m. at the North Congregational Church on Main Street with the former pastor,
the Rev. Jay Sprout, officiating. Cremation will follow as per her wish.
