Leonard H. Jones , 72, Vernon, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at the
Oneida Healthcare Center following a brief illness. Born in St. Johnsbury,
Vt., on March 31, 1935, he was the son of Glen H. and Sylvia Turner Jones. A
resident of Vernon for the past 18 years, Mr. Jones was educated at St.
Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1953, where his football team won the
Vermont state championship. He attended Stetson University in Deland,
Fla., and graduated from Burdett College in Boston, Mass. He married
Josephine White on Feb. 9, 1963, in St. Agatha's Church, Canastota. Prior to
his retirement, Mr. Jones was employed with Schwartz Manufacturing of
Wisconsin. Previously, he was employed with Eastern Crown Inc. of Vernon
for more than 20 years as a sales representative, and also owned and
operated with his wife for 18 years, Trestle Acres Bed and Breakfast Inn in
Vernon. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was stationed in Korea. Mr. Jones
was a member and past president of the New York State Milk and Food
Sanitarians and was a member of the Oneida Elks Lodge No. 787,
Benevolent and Protective order of the Elks for more than 50 years.
Surviving besides his wife, Jospehine, are two daughters and one
son-in-law, Cecilia and Patrick Cowen, and Nellie Jones, all of Oneida, N.Y.;
one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel H. and Janet Joes of Oneida; four
grandchildren, Harry Jones III, Jamison Jones, Peter Cowen, and Donald
Cowen; one sister, Lucille Oakes of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and several nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Daniel "Buster" Jones.
