John "Chippy" Mayhew, 77, of Vernon, Conn., loving husband of 51 years to Marlene Sonja
(Newell) Mayhew, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Rockville General
Hospital in Vernon, Conn., with his family at his side.
Born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Gagnon) Mayhew, he grew
up and lived in St. Johnsbury and Hartford, Conn., before moving to Vernon over 50 years ago.
Prior to his retirement in 1994, John was a machinist at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford,
Conn., for over 33 years. He had served in the U.S. Army.
He enjoyed working around his house, fishing, golfing and bowling. He was a loving and
devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who enjoyed being with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his beloved children, John Mayhew of East Haven,
Conn., and Hope Charette and her husband David of Coventry, Conn.; his grandson, Nolan
Charette; a brother, Robert Mayhew of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; three sisters, Donalda Page of
Barnet, Vt., Sarah Bergen of North Granby, and Marie Batchelder of Walden, Vt., and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the
First Congregational Church of Vernon, 695 Hartford Turnpike (Route 30), Vernon. Graveside
service will be on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery,
St. Johnsbury, Vt. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Friends of Vernon Ambulance,
