John Cort-Desrochers (née John Francis Desrochers) passed on
Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 from cardiac disease. I write my
own obituary so the blame cannot be put on anyone else. I
passed as expected. From the time of conception, we know we
will die at some point. I was born at 4:20 pm on July 11th,
1937 at 17 Maple Street in St. Johnsbury, VT, to Felix and
Marieanna (Pinard) Desrochers, joining seven siblings. The first
child died at two and a half days of age. I was predeceased by
Alfred, Armand, Marguerite, Robert, and Paul. I am survived by
Sr. Bernadette and Rachel Helen who is married to Leo
Ducharme. I married Patricia (Sanders) Desrochers, and we
brought forth five children who survive me: Kevin, Joe is
married to Stacey, Sam is married to Tracy, Pam is married to
David, and Lisette is married to Phil. My dear wife, Sheila and
our son, Tom, who is married to Bridget survive me as well. I
am also survived by my grandchildren: Erica, Mike, Jordan,
Hanna, Danielle, Jacob, Jonah, Megan and Lucinda, along with
my great granddaughter, Ava.
It would be difficult, if not impossible, to list all of the
descendants of Felix and Marieanna Desrochers. To celebrate
the year 2000, I sponsored a family reunion at the Knights of
Columbus Hall, in Barre, VT. Over 90 of Felix’s descendants
showed up, so you can see I am survived by many nieces,
nephews, and cousins. To learn more about the family and
about my life, you can obtain a book I authored, "Up from
Maple Street", free of charge, at the reception after my funeral
while the supply lasts.
The various careers I undertook include 36 years as an
educator, both elementary and secondary in Vermont schools. I
retired in 1993 as the high school principal in Williamstown. I
also was a part time hardware clerk at Sweeney Hardware in
St. Albans, handcrafted Rosary maker and author of "Call to
Rebellion," "Laurie the Martyred Child" (both original and
revised), "Up from Maple Street", "Oh No, Not Again", and
"Perdition and Redemption" which is the sequel to "Oh No, Not Again".
In lieu of flowers (I’m allergic to them), donations should be
made to Williamstown Endowment Scholarship Fund, PO Box 315,
Williamstown, VT 05679. The fund provides scholarships to
Williamstown High School graduates for post-secondary
education. I started the fund with $50.00. It now stands at over
half a million dollars. My goal was to see it reach one million dollars.
There will not be any calling hours. The funeral Mass will be
held at St. Edward’s Church, 76 Beckett St., Williamstown, VT,
on Saturday, June 25th, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. The inurnment
will follow at the East Hill Cemetery on Gilbert Road in
Williamstown. The luncheon reception will be held at the hall in the basement of the church.
