SOUTH PORTLAND - Jeannine Boivin passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021.
Jeannine was born April 14, 1932, the first of two daughters of Ernest and Albertha (Toussaint) Boudreau in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. She went on to attend the local public schools, graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy, (1950).
Before graduating, through a job placement program with the academy, Jeannine took a job in bookkeeping with Goldbergs, an automotive parts store where she worked until 1954. Jeannine had a part time job before Goldbergs at the local Whalen's Drug Store as a clerk in 1948. It was there she first met the love of her life, Charles Boivin, who was also a part time employee.
Jeannine and Charlie married on the morning of Memorial Day, May 30, 1951, then went by train to Boston for a short but memorable honeymoon as Charlie was on leave from the Army before serving in Korea. Upon Charlie's return to the states, the couple was never apart again.
In 1956, with an occupational opportunity and two toddlers, Michael, and Sandra, the young family moved to South Portland, Maine to a neighborhood known as Stanwood Park, and their home for a lifetime. Soon after settling in, Jeannine was blessed with her second of three daughters, Kathy, the Boivin Family's First Mainer.
While Charlie went to work each day at the HP Hood and Sons Ice Cream plant in Portland, Jeannine cared for the family home and the endless domestic chores of the era. An excellent cook, following family recipes, Jeannine prepared delicious meals and desserts, most of which were created from scratch. However, for Jeannine, her priority was raising and educating her children with academic, religious, etiquette, and life lessons. Jeannine was also active supporting the development of her children by serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Campfire Girls activity leader.
Jeannine enjoyed planning Family vacations; from renting a rustic camp on a lake, trips to Acadia National Park, Plymouth Plantation, and 1964/1965 New York World's Fair. In the winter season there were family snowmobiling trips with wilderness cookouts.
Once her children were of responsible age, Jeannine went back into the workforce becoming one of the first employees of Hannaford Bros. drug store chain, Wellby Drugstore at their Millcreek location. Jeannine managed the front end of the store as cashier for 20 years, mentoring both the managers and teenage employees while becoming friend and confidant of her clientele.
Life didn't slow down for Jeannine when she hit her 50's. That is when she and Charlie started riding cross country on their motorcycle. For more than a dozen years, Jeannine would spend the winter months considering the route of travel based on which National Park or scenic roads the couple wanted to visit and travel. However, the routes were secondary to visiting their daughter Sandy and family of granddaughters in California. Once there, trips to Disneyland and other adventure parks were enjoyed by one and all.
Once retired Jeannine and Charlie, continued to enjoy traveling in the winter and gardening in the summer months. Jeannine cared for her home's flower gardens while Charlie cultivated a large vegetable garden on farmland rented from Bob Fickett. The yield from the garden was shared with extended family and neighbors, while Jeannine loved canning and preserving the surplus.
Later in life Jeannine was challenged with health issues all the while maintaining her Faith; following the same religious practices she shared with her children decades before. With the love and devotion of Charlie and daughter Kathy, Jeannine spent many years at home in the care of her family.
Jeannine's Family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence where Jeannine spent the final years of her life. The Kitchen Staff provided special meals throughout her stay, never waiving upon request. The health care professionals were all so kind and loving to Jeannine and our Family for which we will be forever grateful.
Jeannine is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles, sister Joan Garboriault, son Michael, wife Gail, daughter Sandra Smith, daughter Kathy Hanlon, husband Brian, and daughter Deborah Hannigan. Granddaughters Jerry Stern, Betty Minnick, Karma Brubaker, and Malika Azziz. Grandson Nicholas Dennison and many Great Grandchildren.
