It is with great sadness that we announce that Janet Carlson passed away on September 10th, 2020 and Neale Carlson passed away two days later on September 12th , 2020 due to complications from Covid-19.
Neale and Janet Carlson arrived in this world in July 1937. Janet L. Baxter was born to Norman and Marjorie Baxter on July 2nd. Neale H. Carlson was born to Eva Paradis and Peter Kostyun six days later on July 8th.
Janet grew up in Medford, Massachusetts and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy, in St Johnsbury, Vermont. She married her childhood sweetheart Neale Carlson in January 1957. He served in the Army, trained as a tank commander and stationed in West Berlin during construction of the Berlin Wall. He was transferred back to Colorado Springs where Janet joined him to Elope. They remained out west before settling in Warner, New Hampshire. They raised their family Norman, Neale, Todd, and Lisa Carlson on Peaceful Retreat Farm. They loved their children and enjoyed doing many projects with them. They raised pigs, sheep, chickens, grew vegetable gardens, produced maple syrup, built a barn, cleared land and cut wood.
Jan most loved her family and friends and was very active in Warner. She enjoyed her Church, The United Church of Warner, and was a member of Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jan enjoyed researching the genealogy of her family and delighted in discovering new things about her family. She even attended a Libby family reunion in Maine. Cemeteries were a fascination of hers. She could recount much of a family's history by reading the stones. In fact, she and a friend had many picnics in old graveyards. Jan also found time to graduate from New Hampshire College with a degree in Social Work. She delighted in spending a week's vacation with her friend Ruth in Owls Head, Maine for 11 consecutive years. She loved history and had visited most of the president's houses and eagerly read historical biographies. Among her favorites were those of Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln and most recently she enjoyed Michelle Obama.
Jan sewed for many years. She made quilts for her family and was well known for her pillowcases. She made hundreds to fill with Christmas toys for children and for servicemen overseas. She also made placemats for the recreation Center in Walden Woods and knit many pairs of socks for her family. This year she finished a pair for her grandson Sam who had requested them. She was so proud that she could finish them because, as she said, "my eyes just aren't what they used to be!"
Her family and friends would tell you that she was a great listener and conversationalist. If you had a problem, you could talk with her and she would offer help or just a wonderful loving hug.
Neale grew up an only child in Norton, Massachusetts. He attended St. Johnsbury Academy, in St Johnsbury, Vermont. Neale was a Painting Contractor for much of his working career, but he and Janet also fostered many children and were recognized for their tireless efforts. Neale also believed that community service was important, and he spent many years on the Warner Zoning and Planning Boards.
Neale was a quiet man, but when he got to know you he was friendly, interesting and had a good sense of humor. He was very talented with his stained glass, woodworking, bowl turning, and weaving. His works are readily seen in the homes of his children and many friends. He could also bake wonderful bread and had impeccable taste in music enjoying classic Blues, Jazz, and Country artists. It was not uncommon to hear BB King, Hank Williams Sr, or Miles Davis coming from his shop or on his car stereo.
Neale enjoyed being outdoors and took his children on many camping and hiking trips in the White Mountains. He really enjoyed the Pemigewasset Wilderness Area, The Presidential Range, and mostly hiking around his property in Warner, New Hampshire. Neale also enjoyed meeting his sons at Grey Knob Hut on Mt. Jefferson for many New Years Eves.
Janet and Neale enjoyed traveling. Over the years they made many trips throughout the country and numerous trips to Alaska. One highlight for Janet would be a tour of London and a trip on the Queen Mary from the UK back to the United States. Eventually, they settled in Homosassa, Florida to enjoy the warm weather. They spent their time sewing, turning bowls, weaving and exploring the area. They were never afraid of adventure or trying new things. Their children benefitted greatly from this.
Janet and Neale are survived by Janet's sister Barbara Hansen, Neale and Janet's children and their spouses: Norman Carlson, Todd and Jenny Carlson, Neale Carlson and Lisa Carlson, and Grandchildren and their spouses Joshua and Hailey Carlson, Hannah Carlson and Evan Ward, Mckenzie and Curtis Sims, Sam and Christina Carlson, Mitchell Brewster, Gabrielle, Bennett and Sarah Call, and 5 great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Ben, Bridget, Harry, and Aiden.
Janet and Neale were loved and will be missed.
Friends may call at the United Church of Warner at 1pm on June 12th, 2021. There will be a reception following the service with details provided at that time.
