Elizabeth "Betsy" Emmons , of Wilmington, N.C., died Sept. 26, 2005, at
Britthaven of Wrightsville Beach, at the age of 70. This was after an
extended period of time with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in St.
Johnsbury, Vt., Feb. 3, 1935. She was adopted by Marion and Alfred
Sparrow after her mother died. Elizabeth attended local schools in St.
Johnsbury and was active in the school and town bands. She enjoyed
crafts, playing the piano and was a wonderful cook. In October 1955, she
married Norman H. Emmons. They lived in Danville, Vt.; Chester, Vt.; and
Rutland Vt. In October 1980, they moved to Wilmington, N.C., and both
retired in the 1990s. They were avid campers since 1968. Elizabeth is
survived by her husband, Norman H. Emmons; a daughter, Cymbeline
Leach and her husband Mark of Wilmington; a granddaughter, Stacie
Leach of Wilmington; a brother, Perley Sparrow; a sister, Thea Warren; a
half-brother; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be
held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at St. Mark Catholic Church, Wilmington,
N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's
Association, Eastern NC Chapter, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, NC 27605.
