Edith A. "Edie" Carleton, 80, of Sutton died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, 2012 at her home
surrounded by her family. She was born in Waterford, Vt., on Nov. 16, 1932, the
daughter of Rupert and Grace (Rollins) Salt. Edie graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy and then
attended the University of Vermont and received her bachelor's degree in education from Lyndon State
College. On Aug. 27, 1955 she married Otis Carleton. Mrs. Carleton was a devoted teacher who loved her
students. She had taught elementary school in several area towns for over 30 years. They include Barton,
Lyndonville, Sheffield, and in 1989 she retired from the Sutton Village School where she had taught for many
years. She had been a member of the Sutton Christmas Club and was an active member of the
Lyndonville First Congregational Church where she sang in the choir for many years.
Edie was a kind and generous woman. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting, feeding
and watching birds and wildlife and spending time with family at their camp in Newark.
Survivors include her husband, Otis Carleton of Sutton; three children, Sarah Carleton and
spouse Mark Klammer of Hammondsport, N.Y., Dan Carleton and partner Don Timson of St.
Johnsbury, and Peter Carleton and wife Marie of Sutton; five grandchildren, Theresa and
Sean, Tyler, Adam and Jeannie, Liese and Mat, and Hannah; one great-granddaughter,
Claire; a brother, Albert Salt of West Burke; a sister, Joyce Racenet and husband Ernest of
Danville; one niece and two nephews; and her beloved feline companions. She was
predeceased by her parents. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
