Claire Pierce , a native of St. Johnsbury and longtime resident of East
Montpelier, passed away somewhat unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010,
at Central Vermont Hospital at the age of 74. She was born in
St. Johnsbury on Aug. 10, 1936, the daughter of Alfred and Antoinette
(Veilleux) Roy. Claire graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1955.
She is survived by her husband, Stanley, whom she married Sept. 17, 1955;
two sons, Jeffrey Pierce and wife Heidi of Milton, Jonathan
Pierce and wife Amanda of Barre; five grandchildren: Savannah and
Cain, Emily, Grace and Nicholas; one brother, Paul Roy of Weymouth,
Mass.; two sisters, Theresa Dunbar of Fairfield, Calif., Helen Godin and
husband Raphael of Fitchburg, Mass.; sister-in-law Carol Pilette of
Marshfield; brother-in-law Herbert Smith of Connecticut; nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Alfred Roy Jr., and a
sister Arlene Smith. In addition to being a loving and supportive wife
and mother, Claire was a French-Roman Catholic and a patron of
Saint Augustine's Church in Montpelier, a longtime member of the
Barre Paletteers, a para-educator at East Montpelier Elementary
School, and an active member of the Republican Party. A funeral Mass
will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury this Friday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at St.
John the Evangelist Church with burial following at Mt. Calvary
Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at Sayles Funeral Home in St.
Johnsbury Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial
