Mrs. Ruth Brown of Portland St. in St. Johnsbury passed away
at home Thursday, June 11, 2015.
She was born in East St. Johnsbury on March 20, 1925, one of
nine children born to Charles and Julia (Longmoore) Babcock.
Her husband Stanwood 'Red' Brown passed away in 1996.
After graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1944, Ruth
began working at Gilman Paper Co. working in the gum tape
department. She retired in the important position of quality
control inspector in the dry-end lab, working for the company
until of 7l. Roger reflects that most people worked to live; not
his mother. She lived to work. Her work was her life, and her
co-workers were her second family. Family was extremely
important to her, providing and helping where and when she
could; it wasn't uncommon for her to help her brothers on their
farms during haying season, working just as hard as the men getting the hay in.
She is survived by her son Roger Brown and his wife Mayumi of
Concord; three grandchildren: Edward Brown and Erin Welch of
Victory, Jennifer Baker and husband Larry of Bath N.H., Connie
McElgin and husband John of Woodbury Pa.; four great-
grandchildren Kasey and Rian McElgin, Logan Baker, and
Krystne Ramirez. She has one surviving sister, Alice
Steinmuller, of Ocala, Florida and New Hartford, Connecticut;
several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A very special thanks to Star Lunnie and Wanda Hill for the care
they provided in her time of need.
Graveside services will be held at the Grove Cemetery in East
St. Johnsbury Sunday, July 26, at 1 p.m. with Mr. John Sleeper
officiating. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome.
Memorial contributions could be directed to the church where
Ruth grew up. Memorial contributions could be directed to The
