Mr. Roland Paul Dumas passed away in his residence on Saturday, March 17, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Roland was born on Oct. 29, 1930 in St. Johnsbury, Vt. to Onesime and Mary Jane Carriere Dumas.
Roland, or "RP" as he was known to his friends grew up in St. Johnsbury, Vt. After graduation from St. Johnsbury Academy, Class of 1949, he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served during the Korean War and was stationed in French Morocco. RP was transferred to Chennault Air Field where he was eventually released from active duty. He has been a resident of the Lake Charles, Louisiana area for 65 years.
RP worked in the automotive field as a salesman for over 55 years. He worked for Donaldson Pontiac, Cagle Chevrolet, Radford Buick, and he even owned his own lot, Dumas Motors. He retired from Shetler Lincoln Mercury. Over the years he developed friendships with many of his loyal customers. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Lake Charles Country Club. He was also a faithful supporter of McNeese athletics.
RP is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Louis Paul Dumas along with his beloved dog Fifi.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife of 63 years, Billie Jean Wilkins Dumas; his three daughters, Theresa (Allen) Billups, Linda (Mickey) Hathaway and Tammy (Gareth) LeBlanc; and his step-sons, Paul "Butch" (Joyce) Greenslade and Michael (Vicki) Greenslade. Those who will especially miss him are his eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He also leaves his sisters Lorraine Pilotte and Joanne Weymouth along with his brother Norman "Bob" Dumas.
The family received friends at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Monday, March 19, 2018. Visitation will continue on Tuesday morning at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. officiated by Father Trey Ange. Burial will follow at Prien Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the many doctors, nurses and healthcare workers who took such good care of RP during his lengthy illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the McNeese Foundation for General Athletics, P.O. Box 91989, Lake Charles, LA 70609.
