Robert B. "Bob" Smith, 86, longtime Lyndonville resident, died Monday evening Aug. 8, 2011 at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. He was born May 12, 1925 in Passumpsic, Vt., the last surviving child of Walter and Winifred (Converse) Smith. Bob graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1943 and then entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on several vessels as an Electricians Mate 3rd Class. On Oct. 2, 1951 he married Etta Austin. Bob worked more than 30 years for Lyndonville Electric Department as a lineman. He was a member of the IBEW. He was a quiet man who enjoyed hunting, fishing with his sons, working around his home and family cookouts at Crystal Lake. Survivors include: his wife, Etta Smith of Lyndon; two sons, Steven Smith and wife Traci of Spotsylvania, Va., and Dennis Smith of Maine; a daughter, Shirley Bilger and husband Michael of Arlington, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard Smith; and his three sisters, Kay Ross, Doris Steele and Marion Bailey. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Burial will follow at Lyndon Center Cemetery with military honors.
