ASTLE: Philip S. , longtime resident of West Danville, passed
away at home, Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, four days after his 80th
birthday. He was born in Littleton Dec. 10, 1922, the son of Roy
and Lyla (Dyke) Astle. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy
in 1940 and went to work at Fairbanks Morse. He joined the U.S.
Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war
he returned to Fairbanks, where he worked until retirement. He
was an avid fisherman and gardener. For years he was an
"outlying" weatherman for the National Weather Service in
Burlington and for the Fairbanks Museum. He was a master
woodworker and always had some project going on in his
workshop. He is survived by his brother, Robert Astle and wife
Grace of Danville; three children, Eileen Ward and husband Terry
of Monroe, N.H., Paul Astle of Monkton, and Marsha Maurice of
Waterford; one granddaughter, Emily Pike and husband Tracy of
Marshfield; and nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be
held at the Sayles Funeral Home, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. All are
welcome to attend. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial
