Mildred I. Austin , formerly of Vernon, Vt., passed away Friday,
June 3, 2005, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center,
where she had resided for the past several months. She was born
in East Haven on Aug. 12, 1918, the daughter of Arnon and
Glendola (Ward) Austin. She graduated from St. Johnsbury
Academy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Mildred was credit manager at
the Sears Roebuck store in St. Johnsbury. She went on to nurses
training and worked as a licensed practicing nurse at several St.
Johnsbury locations including the old St. Johnsbury Hospital and
Tower Nursing Home, and for several years at the Advent
Christian Nursing Home in Vernon. Upon retirement she lived in
the Advent retirement home and when her health failed, resided
at the nursing home there. Her brother and sister-in-law survive
her, Delmar and Grace Austin of St. Johnsbury (530 Lafayette St.
05819); also three nieces and their families, Elaine Savage and
her husband Timothy of South Carolina, Janice Ely and her
husband Richard of East St. Johnsbury, and Kathleen Greenwood
of Florida; and several cousins. Graveside services will be held
Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m., at the Woodmont Cemetery on
Route 114 above East Burke village with Pastor Paul Powers officiating.
