Merton C. Kittredge , 80, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Saturday
evening, March 10, 2007; his health had been failing since June
2005. He was born in St. Johnsbury on April 19, 1926, the
youngest of four children born to Harry and Gladys (Johnson)
Kittredge. He was a member of the St. Johnsbury Academy Class
of 1945. He married Marvel Ash of Sheffield on Aug. 14, 1949.
They had never lived anywhere else except for their Spring Street
home. Merton managed the liquor store in St. Johnsbury in three
locations, Main Street, Eastern Avenue and Railroad Street. He
worked for the state from 1947 to 1984; about 25 of those years,
he was store manager. Mert was a member of Washburn Lodge
92 in Danville. He had been a past master and recipient of the
Mason's Meritorious Service Award. He was also active in the
Order of Eastern Star. Mert was currently the Worthy Patron of
Diamond Chapter in Danville. He was also a member the
Shrine/Mt. Sinai Temple 6. He is survived by his wife Marvel of St.
Johnsbury (258 Spring St. 05819); daughter Rachel K. Heywood
and husband John of McIndoe Falls (P.O. Box 73, 05050); son
Michael A. Kittredge of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Justin
C. Heywood of St. Johnsbury, Sean W. Heywood and wife Robin
of Monroe N.H., Carolyn H. Brennan and husband Patrick of
South Hero; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Alexander
Heywood, and Rowan Brennan. He was predeceased by a
brother, Harold Kittredge, and by two sisters, Natalie Bracey and
Marion Irving. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m.
at Sayles Funeral Home with his pastor, the Rev. John Marshall,
and family friend, John Sleeper, officiating. Burial will be at a later
date at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the
Sayles Funeral Home Tuesday evening 6 to 8 p.m. The Order of
Eastern Star will have a service at 7 p.m. before they adjourn to
their regular monthly meeting. A Masonic service will follow the
