Winooski - Sister Juliette Pepin, 91, died July 31, 2018 at Our Lady of Providence Residence in Winooski, Vermont, at 11:00 PM. Juliette Pepin was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, on March 16, 1927, the ninth of ten children. Her father worked at a petroleum refinery. Juliette attended, like the other girls in her family, the girl's school conducted by the Sisters of the Notre Dame Congregation. As a teen-ager, working as an aide at the St. Johnsbury Hospital, she became acquainted with the Sisters of Providence. Teaching was not among Juliette's interests but she was attracted to the different works that the Sisters of Providence offered. She admired the devotedness that these sisters showed towards the people they served and her decision to enter the congregation came gradually with her experience of working with these sisters. Juliette Pepin entered the postulate in Montreal on November 17, 1945; she made her temporary vows in 1947 and her perpetual vows as a Sister of Providence on November 19, 1950. Sister Juliette did not consider teaching as one of her choices. Nevertheless, until 1983, she taught the primary grades at the following schools: St. Joseph Child Center in Burlington, Vermont; St. Anne of Griffintown in Quebec and St. Louis Convent School and St. Francis Xavier School in Winooski, Vermont. In 1983, Sister Juliette left the field of education for health reasons. In 1984, she was named the director of the housekeeping department at the Sisters of Providence Convent (Our Lady of Providence) in Winooski, Vermont. In this role, she supervised the employees, was responsible for the maintenance of the building and was the buyer for the house and for the sisters. By 2005, Sister Juliette was carrying out these responsibilities on a part-time basis. She met each morning with the employees to review the functions of the day and responded to various requests and needs and, at the same time, she also served as a driver for the sisters for two days a week. Sister Juliette brought patience and good organization to this work for over twenty-five years, saying that she thoroughly enjoyed her ministry. She says of these years: There were difficulties but nothing that could not be resolved. Even as we are aging, we need to stay active, pace ourselves and be sure to take some time out when the body needs rest. On the subject of the Charism of Blessed Emilie Gamelin, Sister Juliette expressed the following: Emilie Gamelin took care of the aged and the handicapped; this is where we find ourselves today. The Charism lives in our time. Sister Juliette is survived by her brother, M. Maurice Pepin, of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and her niece, Mary Pepin, of East Windsor, Connecticut. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday August 6, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Our Lady of Providence Residence, 47 West Spring Street, Winooski, Vermont, with the Rev. Hood presiding. Interment will follow in the Sister of Providence plot at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday August 6, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Providence Residence Chapel, 47 West Spring Street, Winooski, Vermont.
