Hazel Mae (Howland) Prefontaine , 88, of Westfield, Mass., died Sunday, July 18, 2010, in a local nursing home. She was born in Plainfield, Vt., on Sept. 23, 1921, daughter of the late Wilbur and Florence (Houghton) Prefontaine. Hazel grew up in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. She moved to Springfield, Mass., after her marriage and lived in Agawam for 20 years. Hazel summered in Morgan, Vt., and wintered in Bushnell, Fla. She was the widow of Maurice A. Prefontaine who died in 1998. Hazel leaves her son, Terry Prefontaine and his wife Prudence of Westfield and a grandson Stephan Prefontaine. Hazel was predeceased by a grandson Scott Prefontaine, a brother Ashley "Jake" Howland and two sisters, Esther Holt and Irene Ross. Funeral with burial in Lyndonville, Vt., will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are omitted.
