Harold Francis Coakley, 87, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center. He was born in St. Johnsbury on June 17, 1926 a son to the late Harold Francis Sr. and Persis (Ladd) Coakley. He graduated high school from the St. Johnsbury Trade School where he played football and baseball. Mr. Coakley served proudly in the US Navy as an Electricians Mate 2nd Class during both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He served on the NTS Sampson NY, USS Menard and the USS Repose from Oct. 28, 1950 to Dec. 15, 1957. Mr. Coakley worked as a salesman for Sears & Roebuck, a meat cutter for Swift and Co. and retired in 1991 from Caledonian Auto Parts as a salesman. While he and his wife Tootie were retired and living in Harlington, Texas they managed the Lakewood RV Park. Mr. Coakley was involved in the Concord community as a Selectman and a School Board Member. He was a volunteer for Caledonia Home Health and Hospice, a member and Warden in the Third Congregational Church of East St. Johnsbury. Mr. Coakley was a past president of the North American Campers Association and a Life Time Member of the American Legion. He and his wife loved to travel and did so all over the country. Mr. Coakley was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Silver) "Tootie" Coakley, a son Michael W. Coakley, a grandson William P. Coakley Jr., a stepson Randy Carpenter, a sister Betty C. Driscoll and a brother Carlyle Coakley. He is survived by his son William P. Coakley Sr. and his sons Jon and Keith, a daughter Katherine A. Harrell, her husband Dennis and their son Joshua; their siblings Mary Comeau and her husband Mike and family, John Gormley. Mr. Coakley is also survived by four stepsons Robin Carpenter and wife Kathy, Tracy Carpenter, Tim Carpenter and his wife Gail, Eric Carpenter and his wife Stacy, a stepdaughter-in-law, Nancy Carpenter, and numerous grandchildren great grandchildren nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to Memorial Visiting Hours on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. A memorial service will be held Saturday Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Third Congregational Church in East St, Johnsbury with Rev. Ann Hockridge officiating. Burial will take place immediately after in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Caledonia Home Health and Hospice 161 Sherman Dr. St. Johnsbury, VT 05819
