Gilman Long Gilman W. "Gil" Long , 76, formerly of McIndoe Falls, Vt., died
Friday, Aug. 24, 2007 in Lakeland, Fla. He was the son of Elroy H. and
Gertrude F. Long of Danville, Vt. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade
School in 1949. Gil entered the U.S. Navy for four years and is a veteran of
the Korean War. On Dec. 24, 1953, he married Harriet L. Paddleford of St.
Johnsbury, Vt. They had four children, Kimberly J. White of St. Johnsbury,
John G. Long of Detroit. Mich., Kelly A. Long of Palmdale, Calif., and Jason H.
Long of Williamsburg, Va. After returning home from the Navy, Gil worked
for "Marsh" Norris at Railroad Street Gulf and then continued his career at
New England Power Company where he worked and retired after 39 years.
Gil was active in St. Johnsbury VFW Post 793 for several years and served
as post commander for one year. He was also an active member of VAST
and made many friends through his winter love of snowmobiling. After
retiring, he traded in the snow and he and Harriet enjoyed traveling in
their motor home, spending time visiting air shows in Wisconsin and
Florida. Gil enjoyed the "Sun 'n Fun" Air Show in Lakeland, Florida so much
he began volunteering his knowledge and talents to the organization
starting in 1998. He volunteered with this organization for nearly 10
years. Gil is survived by his children; Harriet; his sister, Lola J. Medlin and
Dennis of Port Mojave, Ariz.; one grandson, Patrick B. Long of East
Ryegate, Vt.; four granddaughters, Janessa L. White of Georgia, Amanda
and Brittany Long of North Carolina, Brooke A. Long of Williamsburg, Va.;
and one great-grandson, Dylan White of Georgia. There will be a memorial
service at the Sun 'n Fun grounds in Lakeland, Fla., on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 1p.m.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made
to Sun 'n Fun, 4175 Medulla Road, Lakeland, FL 33811.
