Gerard W. Daigneault , 87, of Tremont Street in St. Johnsbury, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born in Bury, Quebec, on Dec. 9, 1922, one of four children born to William and Josephine (Robitaille) Daigneault. After graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy, he married Judith Ellingwood; they were married for more than 64 years, and for years they owned and operated Reliance Electric. Gerard served in the U.S. Army during World War II and participated in the invasion of the European mainland, landing on Omaha Beach. He was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sheridan Chapter 421. He was also a member of the VFW Post 793, and American Legion Post 58. He is survived by his wife, Judy; two sons, Paul Daigneault and wife Judy of Passumpsic, and Robert Daigneault and wife Daryl of Amesbury Mass.; six grandchildren, Aaron, Nicole, John, Brad, Noelle and Beau; five great-grandchildren, Carly, Nadine, Daegan, Harmony, and Lyla; his brother Lionel Daigneault and wife Eleanor of St. Johnsbury; sister-in-law Rachael Daigneault of Florida; nieces and nephews, Lionel's children Albert, Suzanne, Theresa, Normand, Denise and Annette; Rejeanne's children Jamie, John, Sheila, Kathy (Pamela passed away); Adrian's children Billy, Madeline, Joanne, David and Tommy. He is also survived by Judy's brother, Eugene Ellingwood of St. Johnsbury and his two children Mark Ellingwood and wife Rena of Newark, and Linda Pollock and husband Bill of Bethel. He was predeceased by a brother, Adrian, a sister, Rejeanne Coughlin, and a great-grandchild Jacob Allen. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury this Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Fr. Dwight Baker will be the celebrant. Burial will be at a later date at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends and family will gather at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions could be directed to the Good Shepherd Foundation, P.O. Box 146, St. Johnsbury VT 05819.
