GEORGE P. CUNAVELIS BURLINGTON - George P. Cunavelis, 88, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012. He was born in St. Johnsbury, the son of Peter and Vasiliki Cunavelis. His father and his Uncle John were longtime proprietors of the Concord Candy Kitchen (CCK). After graduating from St. J Academy, George enrolled at Norwich University and almost immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following three years of active duty, he entered and graduated from the University of Vermont. He then began a long career with the U.S. Department of Justice Immigration and Naturalization, Eastern Regional Headquarters. George actively maintained his connections with many organizations in St. Johnsbury and Burlington, especially the Greek Orthodox Church where he was a life member. He was also a national representative of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and a member of the AHEPA. He is survived by his brother, John, and his family, of South Burlington; former wife, Margo of Salt Lake City, Utah; relatives locally and in Montreal, Greece and beyond; and his longtime, very dear friend and companion, Marie Pepin of Cape Cod, Mass. and Burlington. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen; and older brother, James. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Fletcher Allen Health Care and all the staff at Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center. At his request, there will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church in Burlington. Interment will take place in the spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury.
