Everette James Filgate, formerly of Passumpsic, St. Johnsbury and
Waterford, Vt., passed away April 20, 2011, in Sun City West, Ariz. Born in St.
Johnsbury, Vt., on Sept. 28, 1927, the son of the late Frederick and Millicent
(Lenton) (Filgate) White of Passumpsic, he attended schools in St Johnsbury,
graduating in 1946, the valedictorian of his St Johnsbury Trade School class.
Upon graduating from the Trade School, Everette joined the US Marine Corps,
engaging in cold weather warfare research in the Atlantic. Upon
appointment by President Harry S. Truman, Everette served as
the Postmaster of Passumpsic, then as the Rural Route carrier in
Passumpsic and then St. Johnsbury, from which he retired.
Everette served at various times as Boy Scout Master of Troop
107 in Passumpsic, sexton of the Passumpsic Cemetery, and
Deacon of the Passumpsic Baptist Church. Everette raised polled
Herefords in Waterford where his propensity for taking blue
ribbons at cattle shows earned his farm the moniker of "The Small
Farm with the Big Names." After retirement, Everette and his wife
Betty moved to Sun City West, Ariz., where Everette pursued his
twin passions, golf and genealogical research.
Everette is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty (Rash) Filgate,
and their three children: Bruce Filgate and his wife, Nancy;
William Filgate; and Lynda (Filgate) Leavitt and her husband,
Michael; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Everette was predeceased by his mother Millicent White, his
father Frederick Filgate and his step-father Austin White, and
siblings Norman Filgate, Annette (Filgate) Comstock, Marion
(Filgate) Olliver, and Joan (White) Spencer, and his
granddaughter Gretchen Brooks.
Burial will be in the Passumpsic Cemetery, Vt., at a date to be announced.
