EUGENE D. LOWREY - NORTHFIELD - Eugene Day Lowrey, 89, of Northfield, formerly of Williston and St. Johnsbury,
passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2014, in Gifford Medical
Center in Randolph, following a short illness.
He was born on Jan. 13, 1925, in St. Johnsbury, the son of
Russell E. and Hilda (Day) Lowrey. He attended St.
Johnsbury schools and was a graduate of St. Johnsbury
Academy, Class of 1943. Eugene joined the US Army Air
Corps in July 1943, serving in the South Pacific and Japan
during WWII as a proud member of the 500th BS, 345
Bomber Group (Air Apaches), with an honorable discharge in 1946.
He further served his country for 20 more years in the VT National Guard,
retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3.
He married the love of his life, Ellen E. Curtis, daughter of Charles and Florence
Curtis, on Oct. 6, 1946, in St. Andrews Episcopal Church in St. Johnsbury.
Eugene worked in his father's grocery store after W.W.II for several years, and
then worked for seven years as an administrative officer for the VT Army
National Guard in St. Johnsbury. He then purchased a grocery store in St.
Johnsbury, and later worked for C.H. Goss Co. as the manager of the Gulf Oil
department. He retired from work in 1987, and was elected as an Assistant
Judge for Caledonia County for eight years, until February 1995. He served as a
Caledonia County Deputy Sheriff for 25 years. Eugene served as a Town of St.
Johnsbury Selectman for two terms in the 1960s, on the Town Planning
Commission for several years, and as a Justice of the Peace.
He was a member of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club and previously served as
club president, and was a past member of Passumpsic Masonic Lodge #27 and
Mt. Sinai Temple #3 Shrine. He and Ellen retired to Williston in 2000, and
recently to the Mayo Residential Care facility in Northfield.
Eugene is survived by Ellen, his wife of 68 years; son, Russell Lowrey and wife,
Dawn (Sherburne); daughter, Susan Lowrey; grandson, Nathan Lowrey;
granddaughter, Betsy Rice (Shawn); great-grandson, Jake Lowrey; great-
granddaughters, Julia and Sarah Rice, and Anna Lowrey; and niece, Allison
Clark (Paul). He was predeceased by his brother, George W. Lowrey.
A spring service and interment will take place at the family plot in Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery, St. Johnsbury. Arrangements are in the care of the Cremation
Society of Chittenden County, a division of the Ready Family, 261 Shelburne
