Eugene F. Ellingwood Jr, 90, a long time resident of St. Johnsbury and
Largo, FL and a local businessman, passed away at the Englewood Health
and Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, following a brief
period of failing health. He was born on August 11, 1923 in Manchester,
NH, the only son of Eugene F. Sr. and Florence (Hodgdon) Ellingwood.
Gene moved to St. Johnsbury when he was in his early teens and
graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in the class of 1941 where he
never missed one of his 14 class reunions. He worked in the family
electrical business until he and his father started the St. Johnsbury
Community Television Corporation, the first community antenna system in
the state of Vermont. He worked there until his retirement in 1983.
Gene loved the TV business and enjoyed following the CATV industry
during his retirement. His greatest joys included spending time with his
family at camp on Joe's Pond or on the shuffleboard court in Florida. He
was a member of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club, the Free and Accepted
Masons, Mt. Sinai Shrine and Mt. Sinai Fire Brigade, B.P.O.E. #1343, and
a longtime member of both the St. Johnsbury School Board and Grace Methodist Church.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife of 49 years, Earla "Tillie"
(Lang) Ellingwood, and his second wife, Lenora Ford. He is survived by a
daughter, Linda Pollock, and her husband, William Jr of Englewood, Florida
and Lilliesville, Vermont and a son, Mark Ellingwood and his wife, Rena, of
Newark, Vermont. In addition, he leaves five grandchildren and their
spouses; William III (and Joslyn) Pollock, Adam (and May) Pollock, Heather
(and David) Schneider, Jenis Ellingwood-Cedeno (and Joseph) and Aimee
Ellingwood-Blake (and Jonathan). He is also survived by eight great
grandchildren , his sister, Judith Daigneault of St. Johnsbury, two nephews;
Paul (and Judy) Daigneault and Robert (and Daryl) Daigneault as well as
Lenora's family.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 14th from 6 to 9 at Sayles
Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury with the funeral to follow on Saturday,
March 15th at 11 AM at Grace Methodist Church in St. Johnsbury with the
Reverend Kirk Thompson officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury.
