Mrs. Eleanor Gonyaw, of Concord, passed away Friday evening, March 9,
2012, at her son David's home in St. Johnsbury at the age of 88.
Eleanor was born in St. Johnsbury on Aug. 4, 1923, one of eight children born
to John E. and Edna (Armstrong) Conly. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy
in 1941. She married Curtis Gonyaw on May 9, 1947. For years the
Gonyaw family lived in St. Johnsbury on Mt. Pleasant Street.
After graduating high school, Eleanor worked as a secretary at Prudential
Insurance on Eastern Avenue in St. Johnsbury before leaving to
raise her family. Later, she returned to work, first as a secretary at
St. Johnsbury Trade School and then in the business office of the
Hovey's Shops. In the early 1970s she began work as a bank
teller in St. Johnsbury. In 1986 she retired from banking while
working at the Railroad Street branch of the Merchants Bank. In
her retired years she enjoyed her interests in cooking and coin
collecting, and spent many happy years at the family's homes in
Waterford and on Miles Pond in Concord, Vt.
She is survived by her husband Curtis of 65 years; three sons:
Stephen Gonyaw and wife Carolyn of Concord, David Gonyaw of
St. Johnsbury, Michael Gonyaw and wife Ellen of St. Johnsbury;
three grandchildren: William Gonyaw, Ashley Gonyaw and Corey
Gonyaw; one brother: Donald Conly of Oregon and sister Mrs.
William Cutting (Dorothy) of St. Johnsbury; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters: J.
Raymond, George and Ralph Conly; Ruth Conly as a young girl, and Marion Stanyon.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family
this spring at the Lyndon Center Cemetery.
