Donald D. Wood, of Lower Waterford, Vt. (PO Box 17, Lower Waterford, VT 025848)
died on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on July 17, 1931, in Barre, Vt., he was the son of the late A. Douglas
Wood and Caroline Dreesen Wood. Donald grew up in Barre and St. Johnsbury, Vt.
He graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1949. He
continued his education at Kimball Union Academy, and
graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BA
Degree in Geology, in 1954. He was employed by the Army Corps
of Engineers. In 1955, he joined his father's business, Caledonia,
Inc, (dba: Caledonia Sand & Gravel, Calco, Inc.). Don became
President and owner in 1974. Today, Caledonia, Inc. is owned by
Don's son Ken making it a 3rd generation corporation.
Don served as President of the Associated General Contractors
of Vermont and the Vermont Society of Engineers. He was Vice
President of the St. Johnsbury Junior Chamber of Commerce. He
was a member of the Board of Trustees of the St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce.
He was recently presented the Certificate of Recognition for
Fifty-Five Years of service to the Passumpsic Lodge #27 Free &
Accepted Masons of Vermont. He was a member of the Scottish
Rite Valley of Burlington, 32nd degree. In 1976, he was Potentate
of Mount Sinai Temple #3 AAONMS, of Montpelier. Don was an
original member of the Northeast Kingdom Fire Brigade and
enjoyed driving his mini-fire engine in local parades.
