Charles W. "Charlie" Welcome, 89, of Hardwick, Vt. passed away suddenly due to natural causes on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, at UVM Medical Center, surrounded by loving family.
Charlie was born at home on Sept. 4, 1928, to the late Albert J. Welcome and Leila J. (Barrett) Welcome, the second of three sons. He attended school in St. Johnsbury and graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School in 1946.
On June 14, 1952, Charlie married Patrycia M. "Rinny" Boylan in Huntington, LI, N.Y.
Charlie's varied and many jobs began as a baker and delivery man for Parker's Donuts in St. Johnsbury.
He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserves from June 5, 1947 - June 4, 1952.
After moving to Long Island, Charlie was employed by American Tobacco, Coldman Instruments and Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage and Calverton, N.Y. While at Grumman, Charlie was honored to have worked on the Lunar Module Project as well as F-14 Fighter Jets.
Upon returning home to Vermont in 1973, Charlie was employed by EHV Weidmann Industries, St. Johnsbury, Vt., as International Traffic Controller and Safety Manager, retiring in 1993. Charlie and Pat retired to Florida and enjoyed many years in Vero Beach and Tavares.
Charlie was a self-taught writer, painter/artist, musician, tinkerer, historian, storyteller, flower gardener, genealogy researcher, train enthusiast and so much more!
His writings were published in Reminisce Magazine, including an article about his first car, a Model T Ford.
When younger, his hobbies included working on model airplanes and fishing with family on the Connecticut River in Vermont.
Charlie returned to Vermont in December 2016 and enjoyed his final year in Hardwick with his daughter-in-law Nancy Welcome and extended family.
Survivors include: his daughters, Charlene Phanstiel (Bill) of Florida, Pattie Welcome of Florida; daughter-in-law Nancy Welcome, of Hardwick, Vt.; grandchildren Billy and Rick Welcome, Ched Chase, Angela and Daniel Berube and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brother, Donald and wife Randi of New York, sister-in-law Kay of Florida; eight nieces, three nephews and their families.
Charlie was predeceased by wife, Patrycia Welcome (2008), son Charles Welcome (1992), grandson Chris Chase (2014) and brother, Albert (Bud) Welcome (1984).
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2018, at Greensboro Village Cemetery.
Northern Vermont Funeral services is in charge of arrangements.
