Charles Alphonse Nolin, age 92, lifelong resident of St.
Johnsbury, passed away in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on May 2, 2016,
following a short period of declining health.
Charlie was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on April 27, 1924, son
to the late Joseph Gideon and Mabel (Emmons) Nolin. He was
raised and educated in St. Johnsbury, graduating from St.
Johnsbury Academy with the Class of 1941. He then joined
the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater with the
8th Armored Division and Simpson's 9th Army. Upon his
return he went in the family business with his father at Nolin's
Shoe Store, eventually taking over the business and retired in
the 1980s. In 1956 he married the former Elinor Marion
(Smith) and shared 44 years together at the time of her
passing in 2000. Charlie had a contagious laugh, enjoyed
going for ice cream, loved driving and taking long car rides.
He took many vacations in Maine which he enjoyed
immensely. He also loved going to NVRH Cardiac Rehab over
the past 25 years which had a very positive impact on his life.
He is survived by his two daughters: Kelly Nolin and her
husband, James, of Montpelier, Vt., Kathy Diego and her
husband, John, of Essex, Vt., two grandchildren: Emily and
Christopher Diego, a very special sister- in-law: Mickey
Hornbeck of St. Johnsbury and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the
Evangelist Church on Winter Street in St. Johnsbury, at 11 a.m.
on Friday, May 6, 2016, with Rev. Fr. Chris Micale as
Celebrant. A Reception will immediately follow downstairs and all are invited to attend.
Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 2016 at
Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Johnsbury with Military Honors.
Memorial donations may be made in Charlie's name to the
Good Shepherd Catholic School, 121 Maple Street, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
